How to get more Google reviews for a small business

By the Tagwyse team · Last reviewed

Ask every customer at the moment they’re happiest, usually at the counter or right after a good visit, and make it one step: a QR code or NFC stand that opens your review form directly. Reply to every review. Never pay for reviews, offer discounts for them or ask only happy customers: Google’s rules forbid all three.

Why reviews matter

When someone in Sri Lanka searches for a salon, a pharmacy or a restaurant near them, Google shows the businesses on the map with their star ratings. More recent reviews help you show up and help people choose you. A business with 4 reviews often loses to one with 140, even if its service is better.

Ask at the right moment

  • At the counter, when you hand over the bill or the order.
  • At the end of an appointment, when the customer has just said thanks.
  • On the receipt or in the delivery bag, with a QR code.

Make it one step

Most customers give up if they have to search for your business on Google. Send them straight to the review form: share your review link from your Google Business Profile, or put a Google review stand on the counter so they scan or tap and the form opens.

What Google doesn’t allow

  • Paying for reviews, or offering a discount, gift or free item in return.
  • Asking only customers you think are happy (called “review gating”).
  • Writing reviews for your own business, or asking staff and family to.

Reviews that break these rules can be removed, and your profile can be restricted. Asking everyone is allowed, and it’s also what works.

Reply to every review

Thank people by name for good reviews. For bad ones, reply calmly, say what you’ll do, and offer to sort it out by phone. People reading your reviews trust a business that answers complaints more than one with only five stars. Reviews in Sinhala or Tamil count just like English ones: reply in the customer’s language if you can.

A weekly routine

  1. Remind staff to ask every customer.
  2. Reply to the week’s reviews.
  3. Check that your opening hours, phone number and photos on Google are still right.

Questions people ask

Can I give a discount for a review?
No. Google’s rules don’t allow any reward for reviews, even for honest ones.
Where do I find my review link?
Open your Google Business Profile and choose the option to ask for reviews or share a review form. It gives you a short link you can share or put on a stand.
